Memmo Baleeira, Portugal – Hotel Review

Every now and again you stay somewhere where you think ‘why do more people not know about this place?’ and that’s exactly how we felt about Memmo Baleeira.  Set on the same Sagres peninsula as the popular Martinhal, but with much less overt hype, this hotel offers family centred holidays in the Algarve with lots of added extras.

How to get there

The quickest way to reach Memmo Baleeira is to fly to Faro and take a transfer or hire a car.  There is ample parking at the property and a car would also give you the added option of getting out to explore!

The Room

Memmo has a huge variety of room suites both with sea and land views.  We stayed in a one-bedroom land view suite, which gave us separate sleeping quarters – a main bedroom and trundle bed in the large lounge area.  Our room also came complete with a kitchen and dining table, which is just always so helpful to give options to eat in a way that suits little people!!  The room was generous all round with bags of space on the balcony and in the bathroom too.  The hotel does hold options for smaller spaces, as well as two-bedroom suites so it is well-placed for most family sizes.

Within the room there were cute touches such as well-stocked beach towel supplies and poolside bags – all in all it left a great impression on us.

Activities

We stayed at the Memmo as part of our six-week tour of Portugal and unfortunately only had two nights to enjoy it!  You could easily fill a week here with everything it has to offer. The hotel offers an indoor play area and outdoor trampoline and climbing wall as well as heated indoor and outdoor pools.   There is a full programme of activities available for all the family too – from yoga classes, to surf school and bike hire.  So whether it be lazy days by the pool or a jam-packed schedule you are looking for, you will be well catered for!

The hotel is also perched within walking distance of both the Baleeira and the Martinhal beaches adding more options for your time in Sagres.

Food

The hotel has a great brasserie style restaurant on site, with a thoughtful children’s menu, as well as a chic Juice and Snack Bar by the outside pool (which I made full use of at cocktail time!). Breakfast was a lavish affair – you know the kind where there are about eight different counters laden with everything you can think of? From smoothies, to waffles, bacon and eggs to a cheeseboard – this brekkie has you covered.

What is also great about the Memmo is the range of great local restaurants on the doorstep.  Within a less that 10 minute walk you can find some amazing local Portuguese restaurants serving up the catch of the day and cataplana.  We particularly liked Restaurante Carlos and A Tasca, but a good many of the restaurants in the area are well reviewed.

If you’re looking for an all-encompassing family stay, where you can truly relax, Memmo Baleeira has to be on your list. I hope this gem of an Algarve hotel is a little less hidden now.
