The Room
With a traditional Alpine feel, the suite I stayed in was cavernous in proportions – with a double balcony, separate lounge and dressing areas. The motto at Alpenrose is ‘generous with the details’ and it very much starts with the rooms! Grab and Go spa bags are prepared for you with robes and towels, so you can immediately get stuck into the facilities.
The Food
As you will come to recognise across the Best Alpine Wellness Group, the food at Alpenrose is all inclusive alongside non-alcoholic beverages and the offering is incredibly expansive. Here breakfast and lunch are from a generous buffet service and dinner is a multi-option 3-course set menu which changes nightly. I had a delicious sea bass linguine and was very much let loose on the cheeseboard cart….
One thing I was particularly taken with is that, in the restaurant, once you have your table it’s yours for the duration of the stay. Each night families can return to their own corner of this resort, including some more private dining spaces. It really is the little touches like this that make it feel like home.
We also enjoyed an Austrian wine tasting as part of this trip which is run regularly in the hotel and comes as part of your stay.
Amenities
WellnessResidenz Alpenrose packs a punch on amenities for the widest range of ages. Not only does it lean into wellness but also maximises on fun. Let’s start with the children’s programme: outside there is a huge adventure playground in the mountains, which includes water play and a heated indoor/outdoor flow pool.
Inside there is a kids club with a large soft play and a towering water and splash park. For littles, there is a smaller wading pool. The kids club here caters to ages 3-15 and all activities are included in the price of your stay.
The adults amenities are incredibly wellness focussed. There is a recently refurbished state of the art gym, adults only nature and spa pools and a Japanese style spa. There is also a sauna house, where you can experience a sauna infusion.
Sauna Infusions
Before this trip I had never heard of this experience before and each property did it slightly differently. It centres around a large group sauna where scent infusions are added and moved around the space by a host. Some are calmer and some included disco music and the scent of schnapps and beer!
The hotel is adjacent to Lake Achensee, where you can take boat tours. You can also take the hotel e-bikes out for free if that’s your jam!
There are so many wow moments at Wellnessresidenz Alpenrose, which is why 80% of guests are regular returners. From the beauty of the natural pools to the size of the soft play, this hotel wraps you in its arms and says “don’t worry we have it covered”.

Hotel Post Lermoos
The Room
The view is the thing at Hotel Post in the foothills of Zugspitze mountain, the highest peak in both Austria and Germany as it straddles both. Waking up in my incredibly generously sized suite with the mountain range view was an experience I won’t forget in a long time. The bathroom was equally generous and in a cosy, traditional alpine style.
The Food
Hotel Post really majors on the food and wine experience – from aperitifs on the balcony around a fire pit to a daily refreshed 6-course tasting menu for dinner, it has the alpine cuisine element covered! We experienced a goose carpaccio, luxuriously creamy pumpkin soup, beef and horseradish and apricot and goats cheese dessert – topped and tailed by a bevy of savoury and sweet treats accessed via the buffet.
Oh and if you get the chance to have the schnitzel… take it!
Amenities
While there was a small playroom and heated indoor/outdoor flow pool under the gaze of Zugspitze, it was the adult spa which was stand out for me at Hotel Post. With an adults only heated pool and the largest sauna I’ve ever been in – this hotel will ensure you leave completely recharged. The relaxation room with its log fire and personal Bose headphones for music, means you can honour a device free moment in real style.
The location of this hotel is great for hiking families, or ski families depending on the weather! We did a short family-friendly loop hike around Erdwaher, getting the ski lift up the mountain and enjoying the Kaiserschmern dessert traditional to this area.

Is Hotel Post Lermoos worth it for families? Families who want to tie their holiday in with hiking experiences, are major foodies or a couple with a new baby looking for a cocooning getaway will want to bookmark this hotel.
Alpenrose Schwarz
The Room
I was *in love* with my room at this hotel and not just because I could see straight down to the animals in the petting zoo… What Alpenresort Schwarz does so well is bring traditional alpine coziness bang up to date. Stepping through my walk in wardrobe to a cloud like bed and out to my balcony was the best welcome.
Not to mention the glass flanked bath giving me a view straight through to the mountains, bathroom TV and steam room shower. Reader, I was in hotel room heaven.
The Food
There are three restaurants on site and a further two in the golf-complex so you will not go hungry.
The main half-board restaurant, Schwarz Genusswelt, offers a buffet style breakfast and a rotating three-course menu of Alpine inspired dishes and brasserie fare. The duck I had for my main course drew much jealousy from my fellow diners!
Bloom is the newest offering, three weeks old at the time of writing, and for those familiar with the term – is a spatisserie. I had a refreshing asparagus salad which perfectly complemented the range of wellness activities we had planned for later that day.
And if that’s not all, Restaurant 141 is decorated with not one but TWO Michelin Stars! With two casual dining offers at Greenvieh and Stottlam which are in range of the hotels golf course, you really are spoilt for choice.
Different from other hotels in this group, Alpenresort Schwarz operates only on a half-board basis but does serve complimentary tea, cake and ice-creams in the afternoon and attendees of the kids club are also fed lunch as part of that service.

How to get there
We flew into Munich airport as part of the organised trip but for all three hotels you would be much better served by flying into Innsbruck for transfers of less than an hour.
When to go
The sweet spot would be a summer holiday stay in July and August to maximise time outdoors, but I also have my eye on a Christmas stay of dreams.
Length of stay
Both the Alpenrose and Alpenresort Schwarz are huge and you could easily fill upwards of three days here and if budget would stretch and you like to plot yourself, a week. Hotel Post is smaller and has less for children older than babies and toddlers so I would recommend 2-3 nights there maximum.
Overall
The commonality amongst the hotels in the Best Alpine Wellness group, other than all being nestled amongst the spectacular views of the Alps, is the warmth of family-run Austrian hospitality. Each property serviced a slightly different demographic in its own way but without exception they were welcoming of all ages. This trip was my first to Austria and it certainly won’t be the last – I will be coming back to the mountains.
